Top 5 Reasons Facebook Fan Pages Are So Popular

We need a Facebook fan page!

This is a cry you can hear from CMO’s across the world. Just as the advent of the internet forced companies to build websites, the popularity of Facebook is causing many marketers to jump on the band wagon and build Facebook fan pages (I know they are now referred to as “Official” pages, but I still prefer the term fan page).  With over 400 million users (larger than the population of the United States) Facebook has become the number one social networking site in the world, so it is no wonder why companies are building fan pages. Fan pages allow companies to engage with consumers, build communities, share information, improve SEO rankings, not to mention they are free.

Just how big are Facebook fan pages? According to Facebook there are currently 3 million active fan pages.  Out of that number, half are local businesses. With all this activity, the one question that I find myself asking is why are business fan pages so popular? Why on earth are there so many fans? What’s the appeal to consumers? Here is my take on the top five reasons business Facebook fan pages are so popular.

1. They’re fun

Let’s face it; for the most part corporate websites are static and boring. By its very nature, a properly managed business fan page is just the opposite, fluid and fun.

2.  Consumers like contests, free stuff, and discounts

Things are tough all over, and everyone is looking for a bargain.  Adding value to fans by offering excusive contests and discounts is a driving force behind business fan page popularity.

3.  Consumers want their voices to be heard

People have opinions and they want to share them. Facebook gives consumers a simple and easy way to tell the world what they are thinking about their favorite (and not so favorite) brands.

4.  Consumers want to show their support

Like adding a bumper sticker to their car, consumers want to show their friends what brands they support, and fan pages allow them to do this.

5.  Consumers want personal connections with their favorite brands

Almost every consumer has those 1-2 brands that they have a special affinity for. Fan pages allow like minded consumers to connect, engage, and interact with their favorite brands in a manner that can not be duplicated anywhere else.

Unfortunately, #2 is more difficult for a company to do without a large expense.  I actually used promotions to build our FB fan page, only to have FB change their policies on fan page promos a month or two after I started.

Now you have to use a FB application specifically to run any type of promotions, which the only app available that I have found charges an arm and a leg just to run a simple promo.

FB = pathetic.

I understand your frustration, Inail. It seems Facebook creates rules that create more profit. It makes sense from their perspective, but it makes it difficult for small businesses to create a decent fan page.
